Creditors will negotiate further if you have funds available to pay the account in full at the time you are negotiating the payoff. I had a Discover Card where I owed 7k on and after not paying on it for 6 months I called and asked what I could settle for and they said 5500 when I told them that I just received my tax return money and I could pay the debt in full but only have 2500 that I can pay. To my surprise they agreed to settle at that amount.

Well, that was one of the options on the table, hence the final paragraph. There just wasn't anything really doable. That, and I needed to get my ass to work, so time was a factor.

If they were willing to negotiate so much, couldn't you have prodded him further? Like how about you lower my debt and I promise to raise my payments?
