Transmission going out, and other decisions
Talk about super stressed out…
The transmission in the truck is gasping it’s final breath. I really, really don’t want to sink another grand into this thing, and I’d much rather get another junker that isn’t quite as junky. I don’t have the money either way, and don’t much know what to do.
As much as I don’t want to, I’m also thinking about selling the scooter. I wouldn’t end up with a big chunk of change from such a sale due to the loan, but I would end up with an extra $106 a month to send in other directions. It’s good to have as a secondary vehicle, and to save bigtime on gas, but I also only live a few blocks away from work. That extra money each month would go a very long way. I’ve run the numbers and it’s oh so tempting, but I know I’d regret the hell out of it, too.

A couple things came to mind when i read this post. First, you said a few weeks ago that you need to take the scooter more often to save on gas. can you save $106.00 per month? if so, it pays for itself. Second, you dont have another vehicle besides the truck which you said is on its last legs. what will you drive if it breaks down? you dont have the money to fix it or to buy another vehicle (your words). but its also coming up to winter, do you drive the scooter in the winter? either way i dont think you should sell the scooter. sell the truck! jmho.
Not sure what my current gas savings are. Last I kept track of that was years ago when I had a 1 hour commute and spent $400/mo on gas alone.
Yes, I drive the scooter in the winter. I have full winter riding gear, and rode it all last winter when my truck was out of inspection for six months.
I’ve spoken to dear mother since writing this. She thinks I don’t really need any transportation right now since I live so close to work. I disagree with that, as I don’t necessarily know how long I’m going to manage to keep this job. Also, how will I go to the mall, bar, etc? So, I agree – I should keep the scooter, at least until I get things straightened out on the four wheel side of things.
Selling the truck isn’t really a viable option until I secure another vehicle, as the truck is worthless – especially with the transmission issue. I’d be lucky to get $100 for it, which is why I intend to take it to a junk yard, as that would most probably be easier, and I wouldn’t have to bother with an ad in the merchandiser, taking calls on it, showing it, etc.
I stopped by my mechanic earlier. He has a nice little Dodge truck with only 112k miles on it for $3000. If he manages to not sell it by the time I have money to buy it, that’s probably what I’ll go for.
Dear mother has also advised that I go to the old man downstairs for advice…
