Should I Buy A New Laptop?

August 2, 2009 · 6 comments

Eeeeee don’t hurt me, for I haven’t done anything yet, dear readers! As you all know, my current laptop is an absolute heap that I want to hurl out the window. You probably also know that my secondary savings fund is dedicated mostly to building a new computer. However, at the current rate, it’ll be at least 6 months (spreadsheet says 12 months!!) until I have enough saved up for the build. I definitely want to have a laptop available for portability in addition to a primary desktop – this current laptop, however, is not portable at all.

My brother-in-law today offered me his laptop for a whole $100. Seriously. A laptop with much better specs than mine, that isn’t an overheating, constantly freezing, broken down, parts missing bastard, for only $100. What a steal, but of course I want your opinions first. My secondary savings fund will hit $100 in a couple of days with anticipated income that automatically goes to that fund.

Eh? Eeehhhhh? Lemme know.

No. Use what you have until you get things in better shape. There will be other emergencies, other wants, etc. You have a computer that actually works now. All of our systems could be better. Much like marriage, if it is meant to be, waiting will not hurt.

What exactly do you mean by “use what you have?” There’s no using my secondary savings on anything but large purchases that I’m saving up for. That’s what it’s there for.

A new computer is a borderline want/need for me (every little thing puts the fear of death in me that this thing will overheat and shut off… quite inconvenient and inefficient). If I do this deal, I’ll be able to put off the new build even longer, if I need to, and it’ll be a heck of a lot cheaper than building a new system *and* buying a new laptop from a store.

Use the computer that you have now. It’s easy to talk oneself into spending money. Can you talk yourself out of it? I look to the right and see lots of debt.

i have to disagree. yes you have been a very bad boy. yes you have a lot of debt. but you would be paying cash for the new (used) laptop. and your secondary savings are specifically for a new computer! you wouldnt be taking any money from payments to your family or your other debts because your budget adequately covers those. most importantly you wouldnt be charging it! only my very humble opinion of course.

I think you should buy the used laptop. You know the previous owner. I’m not sure if you are thinking about having a laptop and a desktop, but just stick with the laptop for now.

Whelp, nevermind all that. He decided to keep his laptop now and sell his desktop.
