My Truck Broke Down – Again

truckonflat

I don’t know when I’ll learn that the nice guy never wins. I gave my coworker a ride to the store yesterday to pick something up, and while there, he asked me how much I’d charge to give him a ride to Philly and back. After some quick research, I concluded that it would cost $50.

So off we go, down the turnpike towards Philly. All’s well and fine until we get to the toll booth to get off at our exit. Pick a line, start slowing down, hit the clutch, and – wait, WTF!? The goddamn clutch pedal just went to the floor!

Arrrrrgggghhhh…… so there we are, blocking up a toll booth with a truck that went kaput. I walked up to the booth and paid the toll while explaining to the collector what happened. By the time I got back to my truck, there was a straight truck sitting there willing to push me through. In two shots, I was through, on the guardrail, and ready to… wait.

In the end, my truck is now at the Conshohocken Getty (wherever the hell that is), I trusted the rollback driver enough to sign a blank reciept with my debit card information ($96 tow), I don’t know what exactly is wrong with the transmission (but I have some ideas, some good, some ugly), I don’t know how much it’ll cost, I have to once again not pay my sister so I have money to fix the truck, and my mom got the $50 for having to drive all the way out there to the Valley Forge toll booths to pick us up, take us in to Philly, pick up his son, and take us home.

How’s that for a run-on sentence? I also don’t know when it will be fixed, nor how I’m getting out there to pick it up.

This truck has found itself atop a rollback far too many times, now. I was about ready to grab my tire iron and start whacking away.

  • While I am not a huge fan of them, a AAA membership seems like it would be worthwhile for you. I am not certain what the cost is, but let’s say $75. You have an older vehicle. One tow a year pays for the membership. Sam’s Club sells one for less. Your auto insurance may also have towing on the policy. Check it out.

This was discussed with my coworker whilst we were sitting at the toll booth. My first year driving, my parents got me a year of AAA. It was the cheaper option that only had 3 miles of free towing on it, which was pretty useless for me. I did think a few weeks ago that I should really get AAA again, this time the better option that gives something like 100 miles free towing, because, again, my truck gets towed an awful lot. Unfortunately, it’s too late now (except for planning for the next time). My car insurance does have emergency road service, and I do intend on filing a claim with them as soon as I get the receipt, as I’ve done in the past.

Just checked, it’s $45 or $73/year, depending on which option.

  • given your towing costs this time around, it sounds like it would be money well spent. Just trying to offer some help.
