Heating Bill Followup

December 22, 2008 · 0 comments

For the first few hours I was up this morning, it was freezing in here. I easily attributed it to the 17 degree air outside, which was of course much lower overnight. Every once in a while, though, I would feel a breeze. Not a draft, a breeze. Meh. Darn drafty windows, right?

Never having been a fan of wearing layers indoors (you’re inside, you’re supposed to be comfortable!), I checked to make sure all the baseboards were cranked, then dug out the little space heater and fired it up.

That was around noon, and the temperature in here has been holding a steady 68 degrees since then.

Finally, about a half hour ago, I’d had enough – time to pull the old insulate-the-windows-with-duct-tape trick. Naturally, the first window on the list was the living room – it’s where I spend all my time.

The first step to insulating your home/apartment’s windows for the winter is to MAKE SURE THE DAMN THINGS ARE CLOSED IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

My apartment has the fancy windows that you can open from the bottom, top, or both. They all have short black lace drapes which really work with the whole funeral home theme of the place. As such, I just so happened to not notice until now that the top window in the living room was open about 2 inches.

I really don’t want to say any more than that. I checked all the other windows, a couple were cracked open at the top. I also locked all the windows, to hopefully give a bit more of an effective seal (yeah right), and went ahead and duct taped the hell out of this one. The temperature has been slowly but surely rising ever since. Imagine that!
