Electric Bill Triples

November 30, 2008 · 1 comment

Despite my (and I’m sure everyone else’s) lease saying that I’m not responsible for heat, our new landlord decided a while back that he didn’t want to pay for the oil, and as such everyone is now stuck with baseboard heat. Figuring that there was a pretty good chance that I’d be paying for it, I tried to conserve where I could. Now that I’ve actually bothered to open up the bill that I got a week ago, the results are in, and it ain’t pretty. I was keeping it around $25/mo, which was slowly creeping upwards as I used the AC more and more, but this is just ridiculous – $80.74. That, plus late charges, brings my current bill from $111 to $194.

I’ll be sending them a nice round payment of $50 shortly, if at least to keep the power on. The current balance in my checking account also is allowing me, somewhat safely, to finally get my truck reregistered. Once I do that, I’ll finally be able to get it inspected and back on the road, hopefully before that white fluffy stuff starts falling to the point of accumulation on pavement.

A bit of good news, though – as of Friday, and until tomorrow, I am completely caught up with my rent. Tomorrow, I’ll be a month behind again, but that just means next month I’ll both pay that, and build up a little balance. Keeping the status quo, I’ll be $280 ahead at the end of next month, which means $220 behind on the first of the year. It just so happens, though, that January 2nd is a Friday, which means my weekly payment is due, which means I’ll finally be out of rent debt and finally be able to use that extra $300/mo for other debts.

Even worse news may be on the way, though… Wednesday afternoon, all the full time employees at work were told they would now be operating on a 4 day work week. Sounds great, except for the part where that equates to 10 hours of lost overtime every week. One of them said us temps would be “talked to” about it as well, but that hasn’t happened yet. And I’m hoping to hell it doesn’t. It would equate to $100 less per week for me, or $400/mo. That just can’t work. No way. So, unfortuately, I may be on the hunt for a new job soon.

Oh man that sucks. Same thing happened to me – landlord stopped paying for heat and the results were not pretty. Don’t do what I did and fall too far behind. I did that and have been paying them back the $400 I ran up for months now, it sucks!
