Capital One is Awfully Uncooperative

June 16, 2008

Ah, yes. Finally, a day off. What did I accomplish? Not much, other than washing my work clothes, making 5 copies of my resume, and picking up an application for a management position at a grocery store.. However, I did just call Capital One, per Dedicated‘s suggestion.

Below follows the email I just sent The Consumerist asking for advice for getting through to Capital One.

I just called Capital One to tell them I can’t make my payments, and that I want to set up a payment plan. It ended up being only a 10 minute call or so, but I was told pretty much flat out that I have to make the minimum payment. WTF? When I asked what happens when I can’t make the minimum payment (which I obviously can’t, as it’s now for two months worth, and I couldn’t even pay one month’s worth), I was told I would be charged another late fee. Obviously, but how the heck does that help me? “You can’t afford to make the minimum payment? Oh, here you go, we’ll make it even higher for you! But, we won’t bother making it remotely possible for you to even be able to pay us anything.” Am I missing something? How does this help me? The CSR was completely unwilling to help me with a payment plan or to direct me to whoever I need to talk to to do so. At this point, I’m not only at a loss for words, but also for thoughts. I have no idea how to handle this now, if calling them and telling them I want to pay them, results in them telling me that I’ll be even less able to pay them anything.

Oh yeah, I picked up a Merchandiser, too, even if it is a week old. If I bother to actually take a look at it, I might find some decent jobs in there. And I might not. I may risk the effort. Tomorrow. For tonight, it’s Escaflowne (as soon as I find the DVD). Gotta relax somehow, right? So why not watch a movie about a girl that wants to kill herself and ends up in an alternate world where she controls the fate of the planet? Come to think of it, that partially sounds like Wristcutters.

P.S. I knocked my way in to a couple of carnivals. And yes, I know, I did something I shouldn’t have done in doing so… my apologies.

Jake,

Have you ever heard of Dave Ramsey? He shows you how to get out of debt and deal with creditors, creditor calls, and negotiating your debt. It’s their job to make you mad enough to pay them before you buy necessities, and he has tips for dealing with that.

You can download The Dave Ramsey Show podcast from iTunes or stream it from his Web site at http://www.daveramsey.com.

I can also recommend his books, The Total Money Makeover and Financial Peace University. They help take a load off your debt stress level.
