Hurray for Overpayments!

March 13, 2008

We all know the payroll department is kind of screwy. Ever since I started this job, they’ve had a habit of paying me an hour or two of extra overtime every check. I sure wasn’t complaining. I went to pick up my paycheck today, opened it right away, and a big “holy hell!” erupted from my mouth. I had to fight with my supervisor to let me see the hours before she ripped it out of my hand to see for herself – 9.45 hours of overtime. When did I work that much, if any overtime last week?

Beats me. But I’m certainly not complaining about a $435 check. Kind of makes me wonder what would happen if I actually did pull that much overtime in a week. So where’s all this loverly cash going? Naturally, 10% into the emergency fund, as always. I’ll make my monthly loan payment while I have the chance. But, since I don’t have any bills laying on my desk at the moment, I’ll also replenish that $100 I took out of the emergency fund as well. With the lack of a functioning budget, I’m wary of sending extra payments to, say, my credit card. I worry more about being able to make my next rent payment. Re: time to work more overtime.

I’m also happy to find that I managed to make it almost a whole month without having to buy gas. Feb 14th, I paid $137, and today, finally gave in to the fact that my truck has been running on fumes the past couple of days, and put $20 in there. I can’t fill’er up like I used to, due to my credit card still being encased in a block of ice.

Are you worried that they will discover their error and come back with a huge deduction on a future check?

1. For all I know, they might have a perfectly legitimate reason for paying me as they do. Maybe they don’t bother taking a half hour off every day for lunch. I don’t know.

2. They don’t even fix errors they’re made aware of. My supervisor’s pay is wrong every other check, in a bad way, and they seem to never fix that, no matter how much she faxes them about it (or, as recently happened, is put on speakerphone in the payroll office while bitching like a lunatic about it).

3. Well, there are a lot of things I could say for #3, but, let’s just leave it at that. I’m willing to take my chances.

What. in. the. world.

Sometimes I really, really wonder about whoever is running a company. Just think of what money is coming out of the company for mistakes like this.

Not that it’s something to complain about, obviously, but you’d think bad mistakes could bring on lawsuits or something!
